Calgary Concert Band

The new Calgary Wind Symphony has an unforgettable year of music for you to enjoy and savor. In our 56th year the old Calgary Concert Band has evolved. The Calgary Wind Symphony is our new name, reflecting rare and innovative programming, a mix of the old and the new. This name change is brimming with musical fireworks in our 56th season.

In 2012-2013, we have programmed
an unprecedented three Canadian Premiere performances. A World Premiere, Michael Daugherty's Le Tombeau de Liberace will be performed for the first time in a new wind version on December 2, 2012. American composer Henry Cowell's Festive Occasion will be performed for the second time ever in a Canadian premiere performance on June 2, 2013. Henry Cowell family lived in Calgary in the 1890s, so this is a homecoming!

	Fantastic Music from Other Times and Places Euphonium virtuoso Casey Smith soars in the Fantasia of Gordon Jacob, while Aaron Copland's"An Outdoor Overture" shows the American composer at the height of his compositional powers.
	Hilarious Holidays! Music to Warm and Tickle. . . Calgary pianist Julie Jacques brings the glitzy, glittering and audacious spirit of Liberace back to Calgary in the world premiere performance of Michael Daugherty's"Le Tombeau de Liberace".
	Music of Mysteries, Legends and Ritual. Renowned Canadian saxophonist Jeremy Brown will perform the Canadian premiere of the new and eagerly anticipated Kenneth Fuchs Concerto for Saxophone. Flautist Terri Shouldice will perform the breathtakingly beautiful "Poem of Charles Griffes".
	Apollo Sings! Music that Soars! Clarinetists Mary Hamm and Noel Jones will be the features soloists for Felix Mendelsohn's string quartet - "Concertpeice No. 2 - Is it True?". Each musical selection on this program is an ode to the power of music.
